Once desolate swamp land in the city of Boston, the Back Bay was filled in with dirt and gravel beginning in the mid-1850s. Upon completion, the Back Bay added some 450 acres of land to the city of Boston. Today, the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston is often considered the city’s most desirable neighborhood where one could live. Lining many of the streets of Back Bay are stately victorian rowhouses built in the late 18th, and early 19th century. Back Bay’s luxury condo high rises are also some of the most sought after in the city with premiere developments like The Residences at The Mandarin Oriental, The Four Seasons, and The Clarendon.
Back Bay is home to some of country’s most famous early architecture, including the Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, and the rowhouses of Beacon Street, Commonwealth Avenue, and Marlborough Street. The Back Bay has become a commercial hub in Boston, with attractions like Copley Square, Newbury Street, and the Prudential Center. Famous green spaces include Copley Square, which hosts bi-weekly farmers’ markets in the summer, as well as the Esplanade, an immensely popular network of parks, bike trails, and fields along the Charles River that hosts the city’s annual 4th of July celebration with the Boston Pops Symphony Orchestra.
